Welcome to Baseball Blend

We know what you’re thinking: Why another baseball blog? Our response: Why not?

Actually, we’re doing it because we want to break free from the single-team focus of our current Detroit Tigers blogs. For the better part of 15 years, not much was happening in Detroit as far as major league baseball was concerned. Thirteen years of futility and aimless rebuilding will do that to you. So, Tigers fans had to look elsewhere to experience winning baseball — and compelling baseball stories.

Then along came 2006.

Now that the Tigers are back on the map, the team’s fans can get enough coverage. The result: Tigers blogs galore — including my The Daily Fungo and Ian’s Bless You Boys. Yet, we still enjoy talking about the other 29 MLB teams and the stories that don’t involve the Tigers. And that’s why we’re launching Baseball Blend as a complementary blog to our Tigers sites.

I hope you enjoy what you see here and, more importantly, join in on the discussion. (Speaking of which, we’ve set up a Twitter account for the blog. If you’re on Twitter follow us at BaseballBlend.) Now I’ll hand the virtual keyboard to Ian Casselberry for a few words…

…Thank you, Mike McClary.

The past two years have provided something of a baseball renaissance. Obviously, as a fan, I’ve enjoyed being reminded just how fun it is to watch a team play winning baseball. And as a blogger who’s followed the Tigers full-time over the past year, I remembered just how much I love writing about baseball - period. I’ve been nursing an itch to write about the overall sport, often caused by the chats I had with Mike regarding the other teams in MLB.

So as George Costanza once realized when talking to Jerry Seinfeld that their conversations about nothing should comprise their fledgling sitcom, Mike hit the sweet spot when he proposed the idea for Baseball Blend. (I’ll admit, the cool logo his designer came up with also helped.) I’m really excited about this, and hope we entertain you enough to keep you coming back to talk baseball with us.

Best of luck to you guys - I’m looking forward to the blog since I enjoy both of your current gigs. Incidentally, when I subscribed in Google Reader, it titled the feed “(title unknown)”. Might want to look into that.
